“SentimentalMood” is a collection of Kate Reid’s favorite jazz standards and tunes. Sheexplores the art of phrasing and improvisation while winding her way throughthe beautiful accompaniment of her trio. Kate sets herself apart from othervocalist/pianists with the use of her wide vocal range and instrumentalapproach to improvisation with lyrics and syllables. Saxophonist Ernie Wattsand guitarist Ron Eschete are featured on this album along with Kate’s regulartrio instrumentalists Steve Barnes (drums) and Chris Conner (bass). Herhusband, trumpet player Steve Reid, is also featured on two tracks.

Kateis in demand as jazz singer and pianist in the Los Angeles area. After movingto southern California in 2002, she began working with great musiciansincluding Ron Eschete, Luther Hughes, Paul Kreibich, Scott Whitfield, BruceBabad, Steve Barnes and Chris Conner. She works regularly with her trio in L.A.and Orange County.

Katespent her summers, 1998-2005, performing in Tokyo, Japan. Throughout hercareer, she has worked with many noted artists including Kevin Mahogany, IraSullivan, Mark Murphy, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Raul Midon, Jon Hendricks,Joe Williams, Maynard Ferguson, Rosemary Clooney, Mercer Ellington, DellaReese, Lionel Hampton, Mark Murphy, Kevin Mahogany, Paul Anka, Liza Minelli,Rita Marley, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente.

Whileliving in Miami, Kate recorded for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Costa CruiseLines, the Orange Bowl half-time and parade performances and various commercialspots since 1994. She also performed with Jon Secada as a backing vocalist forthe release of his album “Amor” and was selected as one of four back-upvocalists for the recorded and nationally televised Summit of the Americasbroadcast produced by Quincy Jones in 1996.

Kateis on the music faculty as head of the jazz program and chair of the MusicDepartment at Cypress College in Cypress, California. She teaches the jazzvocal ensembles, jazz improvisation, music theory and maintains an activeprivate jazz voice studio at the College. She conducted college’s vocal jazzensemble at Carnegie Hall in New York City in April 2004. Kate holds a B.M. inJazz Studies from Western Michigan University (1992), a M.M. (1996) and aD.M.A. (2002) in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami.

Shehas been on the faculty of Miami-Dade Community College in Miami, Florida, theUniversity of Manitoba Summer Jazz Camp (2001 & 2003) and was also anadjudicator/clinician at the Brandon Jazz Festival in Manitoba, Canada in Marchof 2002 and 2003. Kate has served on several occasions as adjudicator andclinician for the Fullerton College Jazz Festival at Fullerton, California, theACDA vocal jazz festival at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California aswell as numerous FORUM Music festivals throughout southern California. Kate wasthe featured guest artist and clinician for the Valley High School Vocal JazzFestival in Des Moines, Iowa and the guest conductor for the Anaheim UnionSchool Districts Honor Choir Festival in 2006. She also was a clinician andguest artist at the Alberta Choral Federation Vocal Festival in January of2006. Dr. Reid selected and conducted the California Institute for thePreservation of Jazz All-State Collegiate vocal jazz ensemble in April 2007. InMarch of this year, Kate was the featured guest artist at the 2nd AnnualOceanside Jazz Festival at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, California.

The CD wasmasterfully recorded once again by Brad Edwards of Woods Recording, whoattained the live sound by first taping the band live at the Emerson CulturalCenter in Bozeman, then capturing Eden’s vocals in his Billings studio. Unlikemany of today’s popular recordings that can take months, if not years, toperfect, ”Feels Like Home” was put together in a total of three days last May.

And unlike most jazzrecordings, Eden isn’t afraid to multi-track her vocals if called for, such ason ”Baby, I Love You” or Antonio Carlos Jobim’s ”A Felicidade,” a selectionthat would have fit nicely on her ”Bossa Nova Session.” She loosely translatedthe original Portuguese into English to great effect. Hall provides some niceBrazilian guitar work as well. The other Jobim selection, ”Chega de Suadade,”looks like the lyrics were reworked by the legendary John Hendricks.

Pianist Bob Nellprovides several excellent solos that are proof that his past awards were nofluke. On songs such as ”Softly As In a Morning Sunrise” and ”Puppet Man,” hereally cuts loose. While Freemole and Edwards don’t have any solo spots, theydon’t really need to, providing vibrant and versatile performances throughout.

But as ”best” as thisband may be, it is Eden Atwood whose sexy, smoky voice carries the material(e.g., ”Billie Holiday’s ”God Bless the Child”) and whose lovely image gracesthe vintage packaging. In this day and age of multiple Grammy Awards going tothe unseasoned neo-jazz artist Norah Jones, a still young and attractive butwell-seasoned jazz vocalist such as Eden Atwood could go far toward winningthose awards if she was willing to play the music biz games. But right now, sheseems content to make the music that she personally enjoys, and her fans inMontana are the real winners in that decision.

With a distinguished career that spans nearly threedecades, Schuur’s new album is unique in both material and style, and featuresspecial guests Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton and KirkWhalum. The Gathering is a collection of 10 classic country songs, mostlywritten during the golden era of the 1960s, and is the first time Schuur hasfeatured this genre of music. On selections like Willie Nelson’s “Healing Handsof Time,” Roger Miller’s “When Two Worlds Collide,” Merle Haggard’s “Today IStarted Loving You Again” and Tammy Wynette’s “Til I Can Make It on My Own,”Schuur’s great vocal versatility shines through.

The Gathering wasrecorded almost entirely in one day in early December in Nashville, TN. Thesinger has always wanted to record there and work with some of the city’s topmusicians. Her new association with Vanguard allowed her to achieve that dream.“I knew when the label approached me it was time to do something I alwayswanted to do,” Schuur says, “and the way it came together seems like magic.”The album sessions started at 9 a.m. on December 6th, 2010, and by lateafternoon all ten songs had been completed. Produced by Music City veteranSteve Buckingham, almost all the recording was done totally live, and most ofthe finished versions on the album are first takes. This is the most controversial of all Billie Holiday records. Lady Day herself said that this session (which finds her accompanied by Ray Ellis' string orchestra) was her personal favorite, and many listeners have found her emotional versions of such songs as "I'm a Fool to Want You," "You Don't Know What Love Is," "Glad to Be Unhappy," and particularly "You've Changed" to be quite touching. But Holiday's voice was essentially gone by 1958, and although not yet 43, she could have passed for 73. Ellis' arrangements do not help, veering close to Muzak; most of this record is very difficult to listen to. Late in life, Holiday expressed the pain of life so effectively that her croaking voice had become almost unbearable to hear. There is certainly a wide range of opinion as to the value of this set. [The 1997 CD reissue adds two alternate takes of "I'm a Fool to Want You," part of which were used for the original released rendition, plus the stereo version of "The End of a Love Affair" (only previously released in mono) and examples of Lady Day rehearsing the latter song, including a long unaccompanied stretch.

How many times have you found yourself alone on a rainy day? And the only thing you wanted to do was put on some good music and sit as close to the rain, without getting wet. Maybe, you'll let the rain hit your face. And each time it does you smile. Relaxing? Yes! Well, that's what I did
today.

I listened to Tine Bruhn, a young Jazz singer from Brooklyn. Already I like her cause she's from Brooklyn. Tine has a beautiful voice that moves so softly with the music; making you feel all the emotions that the song was meant to deliver. And her delivery, is like the feeling you have right before a first kiss. The anticipation of her next note is chilling. One of or songs on her new album is titled “Close To Nothing” and if you listen to any of Tine's music, you must listen to that song. I like this lady a lot. And she is surrounded by a splendid band as well.

Jazz vocalist Tine Bruhn's debut album "Entranced" is a welcoming blend of mellow, yet groove-based originals, two contemporary pieces by Joshua Redman with Tine's lyrics, songs by
McCoy Tyner and Djavan, and a Swedish folk song arranged as a jazz waltz.

Tine Bruhn moved to New York City in 2001 after having graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston. She quickly became part of New York’s jazz scene as she started singing at “Kavehaz” and has since performed at some of the city’s best music venues including “The Jazz Standard”, “The Cutting Room” and “55 Bar”. Once a month ine and her group of outstanding musicians perform at the well-known jazz club “Zinc Bar” in downtown Manhattan.

Born in 1978, Tine grew up belonging to the Danish minority in Flensburg, Germany. At the age
of 15 she founded the a cappella group "Kvart I Fire" which gained high recognition in Denmark
and Germany, especially after its release of the CD "Go 4 it" in 1996. The group kept an average
of 3 performances a week during their high school years and they were requested at many official functions as well as private parties.
Additionally Tine sang in classical choirs including the highly renowned semi-professional youth choir “Landes Jugend Chor Schleswig Holstein” and “Jugend Kammer Chor Flensburg”.
Around that time she discovered her passion for jazz and started getting solo gigs.

In Boston she continued performing in a cappella settings, one of them being the "Vocal Jazz Ensemble" under the direction of Sharon Broadley-Martin, a Vox One member. She studied with Sheryl Bentyne (Manhattan Transfer), Walter Beasley, recording artist, Richard Evans, Grammy award winning arranger, and legendary scat educator Bob Stoloff.

In April 2009 the Tine Bruhn Quartet was on tour in Europe where they played at sold out venues such as “B-Flat” in Berlin. A follow up tour is being planned for the Summer of 2010 with a focus on jazz festivals.

It is a lifelong musical journey from the dreamy innocence of “Never Never Land” to the world-weary delusion of “Something Cool.” Yet, Jane Monheit, now firmly established as one of the post-millennial jazz world’s foremost vocalists, has managed to make the trip in just eight years. In 2000, Monheit chose the sweet, escapist Peter Pan lullaby as the title tune for her debut album. Now, with The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me, her sophomore release for Concord (following 2006’s sumptuous Surrender), she is plumbing the gin-soaked escapism of the heartrending tune made famous by June Christy in 1953. But “Something Cool” is just one of several tracks on The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me, Monheit’s widest-ranging and most accomplished album to date, that suggest the honey-voiced chanteuse is ushering in an artistic era of heightened sagacity and maturity. She also navigates the dark corners of Tommy Wolf and Fran Landesman’s poignant “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men,” delivers a superlative interpretation of Paul Simon’s bittersweet “I Do It for Your Love” and embraces such contemporary songwriters as Corrine Bailey Rae (“Like A Star”) and Fiona Apple (“Slow Like Honey”). “I was,” confesses Monheit, “obsessed with Fiona Apple’s first record when I was in college, and that’s the album that song is from. I thought it was interesting to do it and “Like A Star” because both are by female songwriters who are almost exactly my age, and they’re songs I really love. I’m always doing songs from the Great American Songbook by long-dead composers, mostly male. Standards are still where my heart is, but it’s great to go beyond that.” The disc’s title is instantly recognizable as a line from “Rainbow Connection,” the sweetly optimistic Muppets tune that closes the album. “I was actually having trouble coming up with a title,” says Monheit, “so I asked for advice from a friend of mine and within seconds he said, ‘call it The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me.’ I was like, ‘oh my Lord, that is the most perfect thing I’ve ever heard,’ because I’m playing these different characters on the record and coming from these different points of view. Every song isn’t about me. So this cast of characters is the lovers, the dreamers and me. Some of the songs are utterly appropriate to my own point of view, but others like “Something Cool” and “I Did It for Your Love” are things I haven’t lived.” Monheit also chose to include “Rainbow Connection,” the last song recorded for the album, because of wee Jack. “I sing that song to him and he loves it,” she says, adding that she wanted to add it “because it will be so nice to have that documented and be able to say to him, ‘I recorded this for you when you were about three months old and it was your favorite song.’ It ended up being so cool, with Gil Goldstein playing accordion. Gil arranged it, and it’s such a great version. I loved that the modulation is downward instead of up. It’s such an interesting thing to do because, rather than making the tune bigger and brighter, it holds you in closer and makes it even more intimate.” The album’s second recording session, held after Jack’s birth, ushered in an equally stellar team of musicians, including Goldstein on piano, guitarist Romero Lubambo (who provides sole accompaniment on “A Primeira Vez”), drummer Antonio Sànchez, bassist Scott Colley and percussionist Bashiri Johnson. Goldstein also crafted more than half the arrangements, with Lubambo stepping in to arrange the two Brazilian tracks and Kanan shaping “Get Out of Town,” “I’m Glad There Is You” and “Lucky to Be Me.” Among Goldstein’s brilliant work is a fiery treatment of the Bonnie Raitt anthem “I Ain’t Gonna Let You Break My Heart.” The song is, says Monheit, “one that I’ve always wanted to record. Bonnie Raitt has been a huge influence on me since I was a tiny kid, so I’ve had that one in my back pocket for years waiting for a chance to do it, and it seemed to fit with the rest of the tunes on the album.” As for Goldstein’s stunning spin on Simon’s “I Do It for Your Love,” Monheit says, “Gil and I agreed we wanted a lot going on in that song, almost like a tumultuous, chaotic feel with a lot of drama, so that the vocal could be very simply stated atop all of this turmoil. And it really came out that way. You feel this tremendous narrative going on underneath, while the person telling the story is holding back a lot of emotion.” The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me carries a dual dedication: to infant Jack and to the late Joel Dorn, who produced Monheit’s first three albums. “There are so many things on this record that Joel would have loved,” she muses, “and I included “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men” for him because he had a famous version of it with Roberta [Flack, who included the song on her Dorn-produced, platinum-selling debut album, First Take, in 1969]. I learned so much about making records from him. We were very, very close. I saw him one last time before he died, and we talked about a new project we wanted to do together. I literally found out about his death while standing outside the hospital waiting to go in for an ultrasound and hear my baby’s heartbeat for the first time. I was on the table crying out of sadness for Joel’s loss and for hearing the beat of my son’s heart. It was a very surreal experience. So, it just seemed right to dedicate the album to both of them.”

Karrin Allyson is one of the freshest voices on the vocal jazz scene, and one of the most exciting talents to have emerged in the last 20 years. A rare singer with an instrumentalist's approach to her art, Allyson's sound is influenced by the rich tradition of jazz vocalists but remains free of direct comparison to any one singer. Her tireless dedication to her music and her honest approach to the song make her a favorite of classic and modern jazz lovers.

Hailing from Great Bend, Kansas, Allyson started out on classical piano at age six, taking it seriously and eventually making it her major in college. She put herself through school playing and singing in pop and funk bands, and got introduced to jazz through fellow students. She focused her studies on jazz, gradually making singing her focus. Upon moving to Minneapolis, Allyson worked regularly and refined her style until a unique opportunity opened up at a Kansas City jazz club. She took a job at the Phoenix club as house singer, and honed her skills as a vocalist and bandleader before making the jump to New York, where she currently performs regularly.

Allyson's recorded output is varied: French and Brazilian music (From Paris to Rio), a tribute to John Coltrane (2001's Ballads), and a blues record (In Blue). Her latest release, Imagina: Songs of Brasil, was nominated for a 2008 Grammy award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. While her records are excellent, her live performances are the best way to experience Allyson's gifts as a song interpreter.

Claire Martin and Richard Rodney Bennett are on top of their game in this smoothly elegant collection of terrific, but not overly-exposed songs. This is an inventive and charming selection of material now getting some deserved attention. The titles reflect the vast knowledge and innate good taste of these artists and the entire CD is a treat from start to finish. Fans of this distinguished pair will be thrilled to add this recording to their collection, while those hearing them for the first time will quickly join the great numbers of us who enjoy them so much.
My admiration for Claire Martin dates from her first recording for Linn Records in 1992 called “The Waiting Game”. Her musicianship, natural vocal craftsmanship, perfection of pitch, substantial vocal range and ability to swing are characteristics that make listening to her one of the true joys of my life. Claire does not “mess” with songs; she does not over-embellish; she does not attempt any razzle-dazzle merely for the sake of flash and she is supremely confident. She is one of the most intelligent and intuitive singers of this generation. I go on applauding every syllable she utters.
It seems to me that Claire Martin has not encountered any sort of misstep in judgment since she first began to sing with regularity and it may be predicted with confidence that she will continue to thrive. She is skilled in her craft and intelligent in her choices. It is a master stroke as well that she and Richard Rodney Bennett have joined forces on more than one occasion, rapidly becoming this generation’s most gracious and popular jazz and cabaret performers.
My friendship with Richard began when first we met in 1981. At the time, I knew only that a charming man with an elegant British accent had entered my life, that he played piano beautifully and sang some lovely songs. In time I became aware of Richard’s many accomplishments including his highly ambitious compositions for symphonies, operas and ballets. He has received Academy Award nominations for film scores “Four Weddings And A Funeral”, “Murder On the Orient Express”, “Enchanted April”, “The Return Of The Soldier” and my personal favorite, the 1977 “Equus”, directed by Sidney Lumet. Like many of us, Richard was fascinated by jazz at any early age, and he was able to earn his living as a young jazz pianist while studying with Pierre Boulez in Paris. One can readily hear jazz influences in his playing today, and perhaps even more importantly in this context, he demonstrates a particularly sensitive awareness of the art of accompanying. Over the years, he’s played for many singers including Cleo Laine, Annie Ross, Chris Connor and even lucky me! And lest we forget, he himself ranks among the very best of the singer-pianists performing today.
As soon as “When Lights Are Low” arrived in my mailbox, I hurriedly popped it into the portable player, adjusted the headset, and settled into a comfortable chair with notepad. Mistakenly, I thought a simple method to indicate which tracks I’d choose for special mention would be a little * beside each title. When I found I’d ticked the first eight tracks, I abandoned the system entirely. Each selection is brilliant, but I must admit these took me straight to heaven:
Claire sings Fools Fall In Love, the seldom-heard Irving Berlin classic, with such an exquisite intensity that I found myself quickly playing it over several times before I was able to move on. Her voice is so well-suited to the range of the tune, and she sings it with such heartfelt sincerity, it is truly a form of vocal instruction for those who aspire to a career in jazz or cabaret. Please let this version be your guiding light.
Richard has chosen Not Exactly Paris, a song destined to be “covered” many, many times, as one of his ballads. Once again, the listener will be moved by the lyric and the plaintive quality of Richard’s voice. This is a beautiful song, sung by a Master. World Weary is another favorite, taken at a jaunty tempo, and I Keep Going Back To Joe’s is the most moving version of the song I’ve ever heard.
Of course, all the music on this CD is superbly sung, played by Richard in a lilting, swinging style when necessary, softly caressing Claire’s and his own voice on the ballads.
I tell you what: pretend it’s Christmas morning and there, beneath the tree, are 16* beautifully wrapped presents, each one only for you. It’s time to sip a little champagne and begin opening the first one.
Claire Martin and Richard Rodney Bennett sparkle and shine, soothe and swing, all in one glorious package. If at all possible, I hope you accept the opportunity to hear them sing in person some evening.

Metropolitan Jazz Affair make modern jazz with a traditional twist on beautiful tracks like Biord of Spring..

So far Spring 2007 has been rather excellent for a number of reasons. I've got a new job. My garden is more or less finished. There's a new episode of the marvellous Future Soul Radio which includes storming new music like Brid of Spring by the lavishly named Metropolitan Jazz Affair.

Bird of Spring really lives up to its name; the vocals could clear the clouds on a grey day, the brass sounds like sunshine, whilst the light jazz drum beat feels full of the promise of spring. The amazing vocals make me think of Nina Simone, yet from what I can find out they're actually those of a man called Mr Day; its like hearing When You Gonna Learn for the 1st time all those years ago and realising that it was an English guy called Jay Kay singing and not a middle aged black American woman.

I really can't find out much more about the Metropolitan Jazz Affair, so you'll have to take my word on this one. If you like jazz, the music of Gilles Peterson, and sunny days, then you'll love Bird of Spring. If you're not sure then check out the spring edition of Future Soul Radio where you can hear the song for free.

Veronica Nunn (born October 7, 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is an American jazz singer most known as the featured vocalist with Michael Franks since 1992. In the late 1970s she moved to New York to pursue a degree in Theology at Lehmans College in the Bronx. Singing in the music clubs at night to support her college tuition, she met George Walker, a.k.a. Big Nick Nicholas (who was famous for being a teacher of legendary tenor saxophonist John Coltrane) who took her under wing, and she became a first-call jazz singer in the Harlem and Greenwich Village jazz scene in New York. In 1997 she married jazz pianist Travis Shook and together they started their own record label, Dead Horse Records, which is currently based out of Woodstock, NY.
Veronica Nunn sings classic jazz standards with her trio including Travis Shook (her husband) on piano, Jennifer Vincent on bass, and Jaz Sawyer on drums. What an album! What a voice! Everyone should have this album in their library.

Ruth Young - This Is Always

There was a certain sense of nagging familiarity as I listened to the first track of this jazz vocal album. As soon as I heard the first notes of "Whatever Possessed Me," it all fell into place. This is an album of all Chet Baker-associated tunes. Ruth Young was Baker's main squeeze from 1973-1982 and an integral part of the infamous Bruce Weber documentary film Let's Get Lost, released in 1989. Young was also the daughter of Max Youngstein, Vice President of United Artists Company, and as such she was raised in the worlds of Beverly Hills and New York City and became an acquaintance of many high-profile film stars.

When she met the trumpet/vocal legend, Young became immersed in his world of music and drugs for almost a decade before breaking off the relationship. The music chosen for his debut recording is not a tribute recording, but, as she puts it, "my heartfelt dedication to Chet's memory of our own very private and public years together." The liner notes were written by James Gavin, the auther of the very revealing biography Deep In A Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, published in 2002.

The dozen selections were recorded in Augsburg, Germany at the studio of Wolfgang Lackerschmid, the vibist with whom Baker had recorded several fine albums in the late 1970s. Young also selected veteran ex-pat saxman Herb Geller, with whom Baker recorded some wonderful 1950s West Coast sessions, as well as pianist Walter Lang and bassist Rocky Knauer. Geller supplies several sinuous alto solos and helps to reconstruct the world of 1955 all over again. Her choice to go without a drummer was a carryover of Chet Baker's own preferences.

To no one's surprise, the presentation and delivery of the songs is a time capsule Chet Baker vocal session with Ruth Young eerily emulating Baker's phrasing and timing. Is this imitation or art? You're not going to get any negatives out of this fan! If you are partial to the Baker vocal mystique, then this recording should do the trick for you. Despite an occasional intonation problem, Ruth Young admirably recreates an era and even includes some previously unheard verses for "This Is Always" and "Let's Get Lost."

Diana Krall - Quiet Nights

Diana Krall first new CD in nearly three years - Quiet Nights, is to be released on March 31, is Krall's CD of new material in three years. Krall, known for her crossover appeal had twin sons with husband Elvis Costello in 2006; they turned 2 Dec. 6. The 10 songs include ballads, three recordings of songs by bossa nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim, and standards such as "Walk On By" by Burt Bacharach. A two-time Grammy winner, Krall is surrounded by familiar faces on "Quiet Nights." In addition to her longtime quartet and producer Tommy LiPuma, who worked with her on nine previous recordings, arranger Claus Ogerman returns. He last worked with Krall on her 2001 record "The Look of Love." Ogerman was the arranger on many of bossa nova's first wave of recordings in the 1960s, working with Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz and Bill Evans. Ogerman came out of semiretirement to once again work with Krall. LiPuma, who first worked with Krall in 1994, said the record shows how she has matured as a singer. In addition to finishing "Quiet Nights," Krall is producing a new Barbra Streisand record that is slated to be completed in January and released sometime in 2009. Krall intends to tour North America in April following the release of "Quiet Nights." Krall’s previous album release was The Very Best of Diana Krall (her eleventh) and it was released in 2007. In the U.S. the CD debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart at number 19.

John Patitucci – Comunion 2001

John Patitucci's fourth Concord release is a sprawling, ambitious affair, employing 18 musicians over the course of ten tracks. Playing both upright and six-string electric basses, Patitucci continues to explore Afro-Cuban and Brazilian sounds — to greatest effect on the vibrant "Choro Luoco," featuring the wordless vocals of Luciana Souza. Patitucci's compositions are brought to life by some of the best players around: pianists Brad Mehldau, Ed Simon, and Bruce Barth; saxophonists Joe Lovano, Tim Ries, and Chris Potter; drummers Brian Blade and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, and more. Some of the cuts are less than memorable ("Isabella," "Misterioso"), and the stronger ones succeed more in terms of orchestration than melody. Highlights include Tim Ries' overdubbed woodwind snippets on "Calabria" and Branford Marsalis' soprano sax feature on "Communion," framed by Mehldau and a string quartet. The last two tracks happen to be the sole non-originals, one an electric bass/piano duo meditation on Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," the other a solo bass reading of Oscar Pettiford's bop classic "Bohemia After Dark."

Regina Belle - Lazy Afternoon

Regina Belle is a superior R&B/soul singer with a strong voice, a subtle style (although she can go over the top when it fits the music), and a solid sense of swing and dynamics. What is particularly unusual about this set for the Concord pop subsidiary Peak is the repertoire. Over half of the songs are jazz standards, and it is a particular treat hearing Belle's soulful renditions of such songs as "Lazy Afternoon," "Corcovado," "Moanin'," and "The Man I Love." The music is not really jazz (although it hints at it), but the jazz tunes give Belle an opportunity to stretch both herself and the format a bit. George Duke is a major asset as both a producer and a keyboardist, Everette Harp takes a few tenor and alto solos, and the Perry Sisters contribute some powerful background vocals on half of the tracks.

The Irrepressible James Carter: A High Wire Act With No Net

The first show of a two night engagement by the multi-instrumentalist James Carter and his band at The Dakota in Minneapolis last night was an exceptional musical performance. In a previous appearance at the club Carter said, "if the planets once again become aligned in harmonization which would allow us to meet again, that would be a good thing." They are and it is a very good thing.

The quintet features Corey Wilkes (trumpet), Gerard Gibb (piano), Ralph
Armstrong (bass), and Leonard King (drums).

Carter had his instruments of mass entertainment (flute, bass clarinet,
tenor, alto and soprano saxophones) laid out on a table on stage like a
surgeon waiting to operate and expertly performed with each of them during the evening. Carter bends the notes but doesn't break them, stretching them to the outer limits of their register. He attacked and caressed the various reed instruments during tempo, tone, texture & chord changes within the compositions played.

Carter is multi-faceted in his playing; at times he could be called an "egg scrambler" in the mode of the early Wayne Shorter and gone too soon Eric Dolphy. Other times he could be economical in his phrasing and layer on as much texture to a ballad as Dexter Gordon. Still other times he would bring to mind Charles Lloyd, as he would allow the moment to dictate how far out he would search for the notes.

Carter has stage command & presence, elusive qualities to describe but you know when you see it. He was engaging with the audience and he & his band mates were having fun on stage.

The electric vibe created by the band running through the club was energizing and they received a standing ovation at the end of the show.

The quintet played 6 songs in a 75 minute set. Carter featured a number of songs from his excellent, stylistically varied, latest CD entitled Present Tense (EmArcy Records), where he displays his musical prowess on the bass clarinet, flute, tenor, soprano and baritone saxophones. Selections played included "Bossa J.C.,""Bro. Dolphy,""Song Of Delilah" and "Por Que Ma Vie Demeure."

The concert opened with a composition called "Chant In The Night" and the band was simmering from the first note proceeding to rise to a full boil with blistering call and response exchanges between Carter, Gibbs, Armstrong and King.

"Bro. Dolphy" opens and closes in the intense, full throttle, wide open manner of its' namesake, and in between there are intense solos by each member of the band with Carter emphatically concluding the sequence on the bass clarinet.

"Song Of Delilah" is worth the price of admission by itself. The number begins with an extended progressive introduction, followed by Carter bridging to the first chorus and then the musical exchanges alternate between what was called "free jazz" and funk. It features Gibb pounding the piano in a Brubeckian manner, Wilkes riffing while puffing his cheeks in a Gillespiesque style, Carter improvising like Ornette Coleman while his rhythm section simultaneously channels Motown1s Funk Brothers.

It was a majestic journey designed to expand your musical sensibilities and should not be missed.

Legendary Twin Cities vocalist Doris Hines will be doing just that this Wednesday, and she'll be doing what she's been doing for most of those years: entertaining.This renowned vocalist was compared to Sarah Vaughan early in her career, and over the years has appeared with Miss Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, Nat King Cole, and many more. Having grown up in Yonkers, NY, Hines has been a fixture on the Twin Cities scene since moving here in 1963.It turns out her vocal talents are genetic. Her son, Gary Hines, isthe director of Grammy award winning vocal ensemble Sounds ofBlackness, and has put together quite the birthday party for hismother. The lineup consists of local luminaries and fellowoctogenarians, including Percy Hughes and Irv Williams on saxophone, and Jimmy Hamilton on piano. Plenty of friends will be on hand to sit in, including members of Sounds of Blackness and the Peterson family. This is state-of-the-art zydeco from a masterful musician and performer.

Ahmad Jamal is one of the most distinctive and influencial pianists in the history of American music. He achieved virtually unheard of levels of popular success for a jazz artist in 1958 with his million + selling album "But Not For Me," with it's recording of "Poinciana." Critical praise matched that success, with no less than Miles Davis expressing deep admiration for his work. Miles, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett have all cited him as a major influence on their work.
Since the 1990's, his albums have demonstrated renewed creativity, and have received critical acclaim that has marked his career into the 21st century. In 1994, Ahmad received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master's Award, and in 2007, he was recognized by the French Government with its prestigious Order of the Arts and Letters.
His lives shows are masterful displays by an American musical genius.
Critic Stanley Crouch cites AHMAD JAMAL’s impact on the fresh form in jazz as an outstanding conceptionalist. Crouch consider’s Mr. Jamal’s distinctive style as having had an influence on the same level as “Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Theolonius Monk, Horace Silver and John Lewis, all thinkers whose wrestling with form and content influenced the shape and texture of the music, and whose ensembles were models of their music visions.”

Three time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez is considered by many critics and musicians alike as one of the most prominent drummers of his generation. Born in Mexico City on November 1st, 1971, he started playing drums at the age of 5 and began performing professionally early in his teens. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico and in 1993 he moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music and graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies. Since his move to New York City Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene. He has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Pat Metheny (He's a member of the Pat Metheny Group and the Pat Metheny Trio with Christian McBride), Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans. He regularly collaborates with some of the most prominent names of the newer generation of Jazz: Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, David Sanchez, Paquito D'Rivera, Kenny Werner, Marcus Roberts, Avishai Cohen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Miguel Zenon, Scott Colley, Dave Samuels, Luciana Souza, Billy Childs, and Claudia Acuña just to name a few. ALBUM REVIEWMigration is an album where Antonio Sanchez, one of todays most sought-after drummers, debuts as leader and calls on two contemporary jazz stars, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, to participate. In fact, Sanchez has played in their groups for years. The album also features contributions by bassist Scott Colley, and saxmen Chris Potter and David Sanchez. Migration is jazz at a highly energetic level, but at the same time rich with expressive overtones. The drummer shows real quality as a leader, guiding his band members along personal, multicoloured, trajectory sounds and to extract the very best from them. The heart of the album is represented by four tracks performed in quartet (Did You Get It?, Challenge Within, Greddy Silent and Inner Urge), where the two sax players, both on tenors, dominate the scene. In Sand, Pat Metheny s guitar is added to the base nucleus, in an arioso and lyrical composition that he wrote expressly for this recording. Ballade is reserved for triowith Potter, who proves himself a first-rate soloist even on soprano. Also performedin trio is the opening track of the CD, One For Antonio, a homage to the drummer written by Chick Corea. David Liebman was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 4, 1946. He began classical piano lessons at the age of nine and saxophone by twelve. His interest in jazz was sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard and the Half Note. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. Upon graduation from New York University(with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist. After one year spent with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz fusion groups, Liebman secured the saxophone/flute position with the group of Elvin Jones. Within two years, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him. Liebman’s present group formed in 1991 includes guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Marko Marcinko.

A música que interpretam é super enérgica e pujante, com arranjos inovadores e imprevisíveis de temas do reportório de standards e originais de jazz, sendo o resultado final uma nova aposta no jazz contemporâneo, uma sonoridade fresquíssima e ímpar dentro do panorama nacional. Um projecto de alta energia e grande expressividade, premiado como grupo revelação na 6ª Festa do Jazz do São Luiz (2008). Medirse con la voz de Lady Day no es ciertamente una empresa fácil, pero Ada Montellanico demuestra por enésima vez saber desenvolverse en cualquier situación, consiguiendo siempre resaltar la lucidez de su voz: precisa, profunda, emocionante. Flutist Andrea Brachfeld, is a graduate of The High School of Music and Art and Manhattan School of Music. Over these past 20 years she has recorded more than a dozen CD's with many artists including, Africando, Noel Pointer, and Timbalaye. Her breakthrough performance as the flutist for the popular Latin band Charanga '76, catapulted her into Salsa history and fame as the first female flutist to play this music in the United States. While in high school she received the “Louis Armstrong Award for Outstanding Student” from Jazz Interactions. Study with Hubert Laws, Jimmy Heath, and Mike Longo helped her develop her own style. Downbeat magazine referred to Andrea as “one of the finest jazz flutists around.” She has twice been the recipient of the Latin New York Music Award as a flutist.
She has performed with Dave Valentin, Nestor Torres, and Ray Barretto among others. While in Venezuela, she had the honor of opening for Chick Corea, and Paco de Lucia. She was recently awarded the Chico O'Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award from Latin Jazz USA. Her first Latin Jazz CD, Remembered Dreams combines Latin originals with contemporary jazz cuts. Her second CD, Back With Sweet Passion, is a dynamic Salsa recording featuring Grammy winner Oscar Hernandez on piano, and Alfredo De La Fey on violin. Her third CD Beyond Standards is a collaborative effort with Chembo Corniel, featuring jazz greats Hilton Ruiz on piano and Steve Turre on trombone.
She has appeared with the Winnepeg Jazz Orchestra as a soloist performing her own compositions as well as those of Mike Longo, longtime musical director for Dizzy Gillespie.
Andrea is currently performing with her own group including Phoenix Rising, with a new CD out, Into the World: A Musical Offering with guest artists Mike Longo, Paul West and Brian Lynch.

Mixing straight ahead jazz with elements of rock and electronica, the Oscar Utterström Quintet is the ultimate experience in improvised music. Oscar's writing mixes his Swedish roots with the American jazz tradition, giving the finished product a unique sound. To top things off, the use of electric trombone and a DJ makes this group one of the most exciting groups on the scene today. Their new CD Home was released in May of 2008. Oscar is also an active arranger, having written the horn arrangements for vocalist Christina Watson’s latest album. He is also the band-leader/arranger/composer of Nashville’s own TV-show Music City Live.Oscar started playing the trombone at the age of ten. He began his musical career at the music school in Växjö. When Oscar was twelve, he moved with his family to Belgium where he continued playing in various bands, including blues bands, concert bands and fanfare orchestras.Oscar studied trombone at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he majored in Music Business/Management. While at Berklee, he was mentored by the likes of Phil Wilson, Hal Crook, Jeff Galindo, Tiger Okoshi, Lin Biviano, and Charles Lewis. Graduating Summa Cum Laude from Berklee, Oscar moved to Nashville where he worked as a Production Assistant at The Sessions Agency on Music Row before deciding to get his masters in Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University. Through Middle Tennessee State University Oscar had the privilege to play with masters such as Jim McNeely, Benny Golson, Carl Allen, and Eddie Daniels. Totally by chance I met Daniel Groisman, a terrific bass player from Argentina. He introduced me to Cristiano Novelli an extremely talented percussionist from Rio de Janeiro and also to Marco Tulio, a wonderful award winning guitarist from Brazil . I decided that I needed to work with them, so I set up some studio time and we recorded three songs.”“Not content to stop there, we continued to record songs and now a year and half later we have a complete album with fourteen songs. Darren Johnston (trumpet), Fred Frith (electric guitar), Devin Hoff (bass), Larry Ochs (tenor and sopranino saxophones) and Ches Smith (drums) stamp their class as improvisation and free jazz explode in aural splendor and imaginative propulsion on this collaboration. Each has established an undiluted reputation as a forward thinker in taking improvised music into new realms. Change for them is a constant challenge, one they meet on-the-go as they play with their own bands and with other musicians who answer to a similar calling. Composition has a certain place in their vocabulary, but the larger attributes come when they work outside of the framework. Notation can be the bridge between improvised passages as much as it can herald the beginning or the end. Surprise is welcome, and adds to the impact, but the bigger bang comes from the interplay between the members. Frith evokes memories of The Ventures and the flamboyance of Ennio Morricone as he brings in “Biocarbon Man.” He quickly loses both in a welter of feedback and reverb as Ochs and Johnston cries in the wanton pleasure of blistering runs. The molten escarpment is churned by Smith, a veritable juggernaut of rhythm. The push and thrust is in full throttle as Frith, Ochs and Johnston converse. They are not without wit as they harken into the shadows and let a cloak of silence descend. That turns out to be a momentary diversion as they knock back into the heavy machinations of electric blister. “Dawn and the Flat Irons” is another piece of high invention. Ochs indulges in the melody with Hoff keeping the pulse pliant. The mood is spare, but Hoff drops that as he ripples the strings and opens a run of triplets on the bass. This grabs attention, but Ochs and Johnston have something else up their collective horns. Their ensemble lines breathe classical music to bring in a lyrical glow. Melody and composition course through the head of “Reasons for Moving.” The pace is frantic, and the quintet is tightly knit. Johnston moves from the rest to mark new territory and Ochs follows on the tenor. But the rest won’t stay away and they come back in a surge of momentum, giving the melody a discernible presence, but letting spontaneity be the hallmark .

While Roy Hargrove has long since established himself as one of the great, young trumpeters in jazz, his occasional forays into semi-electronic funk, RB and hip-hop have diminished his standing among some jazz purists.

But Sunday night at the Dakota, Hargrove and his quintet served up a set of acoustic, largely traditional-style jazz — while cleverly integrating some of those same modern, nonjazz elements.

Hargrove and his band played several tunes from his newly released CD, ''Earfood,'' recorded by the same five musicians who performed at the Dakota. One number was ''The Stinger,'' built around a walking bass line by acoustic bassist Danton Boller, and a stop-time rhythm. Alto saxophonist Justin Robinson soloed with a bright, emphatic sound, occasionally ending a phrase with a guttural, low note that made his alto briefly sound like a tenor sax.

After leaving the stage midway through the tune, Hargrove returned with a mute affixed to his trumpet and blew a solo that evoked the classic sound of one his inescapable trumpet influences, Miles Davis.Hargrove's choice of stage garb also prompted memories of Davis. Dressed in a shiny black suit, white shirt, skinny black tie and impenetrable dark glasses, the slender Hargrove resembled one of those 1950s-vintage photos of Davis. One difference: Perhaps in a nod to modern hip-hop style, the shirt was untucked.

One of the tunes from the new CD has a French name but a very American sound: ''Strasbourg/St. Denis.''''I wrote it when I was staying in a one-and-a-half-star hotel in Paris,'' the globetrotting trumpeter explained. The tune's bouncy beat and sunny melody made it one of the best-received of the set, driven by Montez Coleman's heavy bass-drum thump, perfectly synchronized with the resounding thud of Boller's bass.

The group's young virtuoso pianist, Gerald Clayton, added some extremely unorthodox but effective accompaniment on the grand piano. While soloing with his right hand, Clayton reached his left hand into the open piano and muted the strings, creating a percussive, electric piano-like effect that fit perfectly with the rhythm section's fat beats.

One of the key drivers of the Hargrove quintet's sound, Coleman is one of a new generation of young drummers who seem to be as influenced by funk and RB rhythms as they are by the bebop and swing titans of decades past. Coleman seems to have brilliantly synthesized several decades' worth of drumming styles. Depending on the song, he can drive the band with a snare drum that cracks like a rifle shot or nudge a ballad along just right, with subtle brush strokes.The next piece was a tour de force display of instrumental firepower. Hargrove shed his shades and suit jacket and got down to some serious blowing. Hargrove's ''Nothing Serious'' is a samba played at a frenetic tempo. If the classic Brazilian samba sound evokes gentle breezes, this warp-speed samba stirred up a sonic hurricane. Clayton's dynamic piano solo drew a thumbs-up and a broad grin from Hargrove.

The group followed that with a nice change of mood — a soulful rendition of the late Sam Cooke's classic, gospel-style ballad, ''Bring It On Home to Me.'

After briefly leaving the stage, the group returned for an encore with a flugelhorn-led version of an old ballad standard, Johnny Mandel's ''A Time For Love.''

Hargrove and his quintet return to the Dakota tonight for sets at 7 and 9:30 p.m.-

Este colectivo de improvisadores formou-se à volta de um só pricipio: improvisar sons que procuram o ser, em oposiçao à complexidade social. Este grupo de musicos apaixonados pela improvisação formam um colectivo de improvisadores em constante criação e procura. O grupo foi formado em inicios de 2008, pelo contrabaixista Rui Salgado. O Repertório consistia em composições de sua autoria com temas de formato standard e alguns elementos de jazz moderno. Depois de preparar o repertório para apresentar em clubes de jazz Bruxelas , o grupo preparou uma tourné em Portugal com o objectivo de dar a conhecer a sua musica ao publico do seu país.
